Mainlining During Ripening
Why the aggressive training technique called mainlining must be finished long before flowers begin to ripen.
Mainlining is a real, useful training method — but doing it 'during ripening' is a mistake. The technique is a vegetative-stage structural build, finished before flowering. Why 'during ripening' is the wrong window
Ripening — the last 2-3 weeks of flowering, when pistils darken and trichomes shift from clear to cloudy to amber — is when the plant is finishing bud development, translocating sugars and terpene precursors, and winding down vegetative growth. Any structural training at this stage causes three problems:
- Stress delays harvest. Cannabis under mechanical or wound stress in late flower can re-veg partially, produce new white pistils, and push the harvest window back Anecdote. A reasonable timeline:
- Week 1-2 veg: seedling establishment, no training.
- Week 3: first top to the 3rd node, form the manifold.
- Week 4-5: let the two shoots grow out; top each to make 4.
- Week 6-7: optional second doubling to 8 colas; let recover.
- Week 8 veg → flip to flower.

How to do it — step by step
- Wait for 5-6 nodes. The 3rd node from the bottom should have two healthy, symmetrical side shoots.
- Top above the 3rd node. Cut cleanly with sterile scissors just above the third node. Discard the top.
- Strip everything below. Remove nodes 1 and 2 entirely — leaves, side shoots, all of it. This forces the plant to route all energy through the two remaining shoots, forming the 'hub.'
- Tie the two shoots down and outward. Use soft ties to a stake, pot rim, or LST hooks. Aim for a horizontal Y-shape.
- Let it recover for 7-14 days. New growth should be symmetrical. If one side lags, adjust ties to lower the stronger side, raising the weaker one into more light.
- Repeat: top each of the two shoots at their 3rd node to produce 4 colas total.
- (Optional) Repeat again for 8 colas. More than 8 usually isn't worth it — recovery time compounds and each cola gets smaller.
- Flip to 12/12 once the canopy is even and the plant is fully recovered. Do not mainline in flower.

- Asymmetric ties. The whole point is uniformity. If one arm is higher or longer, you'll get one dominant cola and the rest will lag.
- Doing too many rounds. Each doubling costs recovery time. For most home grows, 4-8 colas is the sweet spot.
- Confusing mainlining with schwazzing or monster cropping. These are different techniques with different risk profiles.
- Believing yield claims uncritically. You will see '2x yield' claims in forums. There is no controlled study demonstrating mainlining out-yields a well-run SCROG or simple topping No data. The real benefit is canopy uniformity, not raw grams.
If you're already in ripening — what to do instead
If your plant is already ripening and the canopy is uneven, don't mainline. Consider:
- Selective defoliation of large fan leaves shading lower buds — light, targeted, minimal stress.
- Gentle bending of tall colas with soft ties to bring the canopy level. No cutting.
- Supplemental side lighting to reach shaded lower buds.
- Staggered harvest: cut the ripe upper colas first, leave the lower ones another 7-10 days to finish. This is well-documented and low-risk Weak / limited.
Save the structural work for the next run. Take clones now if the plant is worth repeating, and build the manifold properly from the start.
