Plants at that stage aren't producing new growth to shape, and the wound response diverts resources away from resin and bud fill. What 'fimming during ripening' actually means
Fimming (from the acronym "FIM" — "Fuck, I Missed") is a topping variant where a grower pinches off roughly 75% of the newest shoot tip, leaving multiple growth points that develop into 3-6 new main branches [1]. It is a vegetative-stage technique designed to reshape apical dominance before flowering begins.
"Fimming during ripening" refers to cutting bud tips or cola tops in the final 2-4 weeks of flower — the ripening or maturation phase, when trichomes are turning cloudy to amber and the plant is finishing existing bud sites rather than producing new ones. This is not a mainstream horticultural technique. It appears occasionally on grower forums, usually conflated with schwazzing (heavy defoliation) or lollipopping (lower-branch removal), or as a proposed "stress ripening" trick No data.

Why some growers try it (and why it usually doesn't work)
The claims you'll see repeated online:
- "It stresses the plant into producing more resin." Cannabis does upregulate some defense compounds under stress, but controlled studies on drought and UV stress show modest, inconsistent effects on cannabinoid content — and physical wounding late in flower isn't the same as those stressors [2] Weak / limited. - Reassess harvest timing. A compromised plant may be better harvested a few days early than pushed to full maturity.
Common mistakes
- Confusing fimming with defoliation. Removing fan leaves in late flower ("schwazzing") is a separate, contested practice with its own risks; it isn't fimming Disputed.
