The simplest cannabis grow strategy: one plant, one container, one harvest — ideal for beginners and legal home limits.
A single-plant grow is the most forgiving way to learn cannabis cultivation. You get one focus point, low electricity costs, and enough flower for most personal users. The tradeoff is risk concentration — if that one plant gets sick, you have nothing. Ignore YouTube claims of 'pounds per plant.' Realistic indoor yields are 2–6 ounces (55–170 g) dry from a well-run single plant under a decent LED. Outdoors in full sun you can get much more, but weather and pests decide.
What a Single-Plant Grow Is
A single-plant grow is exactly what it sounds like: you cultivate one cannabis plant from seed or clone through to harvest. The strategy shapes every other decision — container size, light footprint, training method, and legal compliance.
Many jurisdictions that allow home cultivation set explicit per-household plant counts. Canada's federal Cannabis Act permits up to 4 plants per household, but provinces like Quebec and Manitoba have restricted or banned home growing [1]. Several U.S. states cap personal cultivation at 6 plants with only 3 flowering [2]. For people at those limits, or for renters with one closet, the single-plant grow is often the only realistic option.
Why Growers Use It
There are four honest reasons to run a single plant:
- Legal compliance. Some jurisdictions permit only one or a handful of plants.
- Learning. One plant means one feeding schedule, one pest check, one training decision. Mistakes are cheap.
- Space and cost. A single plant fits in a 60×60 cm (2×2 ft) tent under a 100–150 W LED. Electricity for a full cycle runs roughly $30–80 in most of North America [3].
- Personal supply. A moderate user consuming ~1 g/day needs ~365 g/year. A well-grown single plant harvested 2–4 times a year (via successive grows, not the same plant) can cover a light-to-moderate personal habit.
The main drawback: concentration risk. Spider mites, root rot, a hermaphrodite trait, or a tripped breaker takes out your entire harvest. Growers who need reliable supply usually run at least 2–3 plants staggered.
When to Start
Indoors: Any time of year. You control the photoperiod. Most growers time harvests to avoid peak summer heat, which stresses plants and drives up AC costs.
Outdoors (Northern Hemisphere): Start seeds indoors in March–April and move plants outside after the last frost, typically mid-May to early June depending on latitude [4]. Photoperiod plants will flower automatically as daylight shortens after the summer solstice, with harvest in September–October.
Autoflowers are the exception — they flower on age, not light, and can be started any time in the growing season with harvest ~75–100 days from germination [5].
How to Do It: Step by Step
This is a minimum-viable workflow for an indoor photoperiod plant in soil. Adjust for hydro, autoflowers, or outdoor.
1. Choose your genetics. Pick a single strain from a reputable seedbank. For a first grow, prefer a feminized, mold-resistant, medium-height indica-leaning hybrid. Ignore marketing terms like 'indica vs sativa effects' — those categories don't reliably predict how a plant feels Disputed [6].
2. Germinate. Paper towel method or direct-to-soil. Keep at 22–25 °C. Taproot typically emerges in 1–5 days.
3. Seedling stage (weeks 1–2). Small container (0.5 L) or straight into final pot. Light at 18/6 or 20/4, low intensity (~200 μmol/m²/s PPFD). Water sparingly.
4. Transplant to final container. For a single-plant grow, use an 11–25 L (3–7 gal) fabric pot. Larger pots grow bigger plants but need more space and water.
5. Vegetative stage (weeks 2–6). 18/6 light. Feed nitrogen-forward nutrients at manufacturer's half strength; ramp up as the plant responds. Maintain pH 6.0–6.8 in soil, 5.5–6.2 in hydro/coco [7]. This is when you train — see below.
6. Train the plant. Because you only have one, maximize its canopy. Low-stress training (LST) — bending branches horizontally and tying them down — is the safest method. Topping (cutting the main stem above the 4th–5th node) creates multiple colas. Avoid heavy defoliation until you understand your plant.
7. Flip to flower. Switch lights to 12/12. Photoperiod plants begin flowering within 1–2 weeks. Expect the plant to roughly double in height ('stretch') Strong evidence.
8. Flowering stage (weeks 6–14 from seed). Reduce nitrogen, increase phosphorus and potassium. Watch for pests, humidity above 55% (bud rot risk), and light leaks. Most photoperiod strains finish 8–10 weeks after the flip.
9. Harvest. Check trichomes with a jeweler's loupe or USB microscope. Harvest when 70–90% of trichomes are cloudy with some amber Strong evidence [8].
10. Dry and cure. Hang at 18–21 °C, 55–62% RH for 7–14 days. Then jar the dried flower and burp daily for 2+ weeks. Curing improves smoothness and preserves terpenes.
Common Mistakes
- Overwatering. The #1 killer of new growers' plants. Wait until the pot feels light before watering again.
- Nutrient burn. Manufacturer feeding charts are usually too strong. Start at half strength.
- pH neglect. Nutrient lockout from wrong pH mimics deficiencies. Buy a $15 pH meter Strong evidence.
- Too-small pot. A 4 L pot will bonsai your plant. For a single-plant grow, err bigger.
- Ignoring humidity in flower. One plant packed into a small tent can develop bud rot fast if RH stays above 60%.
- Harvesting too early. Trichomes should be mostly cloudy, not clear. Clear trichomes mean underdeveloped cannabinoids [8].
- Skipping the cure. Wet-trimmed, uncured flower tastes harsh and grassy. The cure is not optional if you care about quality.
