Growing Trainwreck with Low-Stress Training
A practical guide to using LST on a vigorous, stretchy sativa-dominant hybrid that wants to grow like a Christmas tree.
Trainwreck is a stretchy, apical-dominant hybrid that will produce one huge cola and a bunch of mediocre popcorn if you leave it alone. LST is genuinely useful here — not because of magic, but because flattening the canopy exposes more bud sites to direct light. What LST is
Low-stress training (LST) is the practice of gently bending and tying down branches to reshape a plant without cutting it. How to do it, step by step
1. Wait for node 3–4. Don't train seedlings. The plant needs enough root mass and stem length to tolerate bending.
2. Bend the main stem sideways. Pull the top of the plant down and to one side, then tie it to the rim of the pot or a stake so the tip points horizontally. Use soft plant ties, garden wire with a foam coating, or strips of old T-shirt — never bare wire or fishing line, which cut into the stem.
3. Expose the lower nodes to light. With the main stem now horizontal, side branches at each node will start growing upward within 2–5 days.
4. Keep tying down the new tallest points. Every 3–7 days, whichever branch has become the tallest should be bent outward and tied down. The goal is a flat plane of growing tips, not a single spike. Trainwreck responds quickly — expect to retie every few days during peak veg.
