Growing Original Haze with SOG
A practical look at running one of cannabis's longest-flowering sativas in a Sea of Green setup, and whether it's actually worth it.
Original Haze and SOG are a strange pairing. SOG is designed to shorten grow time by flipping small plants fast; Haze is famous for 14+ week flowering and stretchy, lanky growth. You do get more usable canopy per square meter, but you don't escape Haze's long flower or vertical stretch. If you want a fast turnaround, pick a different cultivar. If you specifically want authentic Original Haze flowers and just want to make your tent efficient, SOG is a reasonable compromise.
What SOG with Original Haze actually is
Sea of Green (SOG) is a canopy strategy where you flower many small plants close together instead of a few large ones, so the canopy fills in fast and most of the yield comes from a single dominant cola per plant [1][2]. Original Haze is a heirloom sativa lineage documented from 1970s California breeders, known for very long flowering times (typically 12–16 weeks) and pronounced vertical stretch after the flip [3][4].
Combining them means running a dense grid of Haze clones — commonly 9–16 per m² — flipped to 12/12 while still small, and letting each finish as a single spear-like cola. It is not a way to make Haze finish faster. It is a way to fill a tent efficiently with a cultivar that would otherwise produce one or two enormous, unwieldy plants.
Why growers use it
The main documented reasons growers choose SOG [1][2]:
- Higher grams per m² per cycle compared to running a small number of very large plants in the same space.
- Uniform canopy — all clones come from one mother, so height, node spacing, and flowering time match.
- Less training work per plant — you skip topping, LST, and heavy defoliation and rely on light penetration to the top of each plant.
- Shorter vegetative time — plants only need to reach 15–25 cm before flip, not weeks of training.
With Original Haze specifically, SOG also helps manage the strain's awkward structure. A single Haze plant grown large tends to be gangly with long internodes and floppy branches Anecdote. Running many small plants means you harvest mostly main colas and fewer larfy lower branches. What SOG does not do is shorten Haze's flowering period — that is genetic [3].
When to start
Start SOG when you have:
- A vetted mother plant of Original Haze that has already been flowered once so you know its phenotype, flowering length, and stretch factor.
- A batch of rooted clones taken at the same time, ideally within a few days of each other, so they enter flower at matched size.
- A flowering space where you can commit to 12/16 weeks of 12/12 without interruption — Haze punishes light leaks and schedule changes with hermaphroditism more than most modern hybrids Anecdote.
Flip clones to 12/12 as soon as they are rooted and 15–25 cm tall. Vegging Haze clones longer than ~1 week after rooting defeats the point of SOG, because the post-flip stretch on Haze can be 2–3× the pre-flip height Weak / limited.
How to do it, step by step
1. Pick and prove a mother. Grow one Original Haze from seed to harvest first. Keep a clone of the best phenotype as your mother. Do not SOG from seed — phenotype variation will wreck canopy uniformity.
2. Take clones in one batch. Cut 12–20 clones at once. Root in cubes or a cloner. Expect 10–14 days to solid roots.
3. Transplant into small containers. 1–3 L fabric pots, rockwool blocks, or coco slabs are standard for SOG [1]. Larger pots waste space and encourage lateral growth you don't want.
4. Arrange the grid. 9 plants/m² is conservative; 16/m² is aggressive. Start conservative on your first Haze SOG run because of stretch.
5. Flip to 12/12 immediately. Do not top. Do not FIM. You want one dominant apical cola per plant.
6. Manage stretch aggressively. For the first 3–4 weeks after flip, Haze will roughly double or triple in height. Install a support net at ~30 cm above pot level before stretch starts. Be ready to raise lights or lower plants.
7. Strip lower growth once. Around week 2–3 of flower, remove the bottom third of each plant — anything that won't get direct light. Do this once; repeated heavy defoliation on Haze can stall it Anecdote.
8. Feed for a long flower. Haze runs 12–16 weeks [3][4]. Plan nutrient reservoirs, pest management, and IPM cycles for that duration. Watch for calcium and magnesium deficiencies late — long-flowering sativas commonly show them in weeks 8–12 Weak / limited.
9. Harvest when trichomes and pistils say so, not the calendar. Original Haze often looks 'done' visually 2–3 weeks before it actually is. Trust cloudy-to-amber trichome ratios under magnification Strong evidence.
Common mistakes
- Vegging too long. The whole point of SOG is small plants. If your Haze clones are 40 cm at flip, they'll be 120 cm+ at week 4 and you'll run out of headroom.
- Using seeds instead of clones. Phenotype variation in Original Haze is significant; a SOG of seedlings will have wildly uneven heights and finish times.
- Topping. SOG relies on apical dominance. Topping turns a SOG into a poorly-executed ScrOG.
- Underestimating flower time. Growers used to 8–9 week hybrids often chop Haze early. Immature Haze is grassy and thin. Give it the full 12–16 weeks [3].
- Ignoring airflow. Dense canopy plus long flower plus sativa-loose bud structure is actually fairly bud-rot resistant Anecdote, but stagnant air still invites powdery mildew.
- Assuming SOG boosts potency. It doesn't. Canopy strategy affects yield and structure, not cannabinoid content No data.
Related techniques
- ScrOG (Screen of Green) — fewer plants, a horizontal screen, and training. Often a better fit than SOG for very stretchy sativas like Haze if legal plant counts are limited.
- Topping and FIMming — the opposite philosophy: fewer plants, multiple colas per plant.
