Growing Cannabis in 10 Gallon Soil Pots
A practical guide to using 10 gallon fabric or plastic containers with soil for full-term photoperiod cannabis plants.
Ten gallons is a solid, forgiving container size for a full-term photoperiod plant grown indoors or in a short outdoor season. It's big enough to hold water for a day or two and support a 3-5 foot plant, but small enough to move. It's not magic — pot size sets an upper limit on plant size, but genetics, light, and grower skill matter more. Fabric pots outperform plastic on root health in most side-by-side tests, but the effect is modest.
What it is
A '10 gallon pot' in cannabis growing almost always refers to a 10 US gallon container — about 37.85 liters or 1.34 cubic feet. Filled with a peat- or coco-based soil mix, it holds roughly 15-18 kg (33-40 lb) of moist medium.
The container is typically either a rigid plastic nursery pot or a fabric ('smart') pot. Fabric pots are porous, which lets roots 'air-prune' at the sidewall instead of circling, and improves drainage and gas exchange [1] Weak / limited. Rigid pots are cheaper, retain moisture longer, and are easier to move without deforming.

How to do it: step by step
1. Choose your pot. Fabric pots (BootStrap Farmer, GeoPot, Root Pouch, etc.) give better root structure and drainage. Plastic nursery pots are fine, especially if your environment is dry and you don't want to water constantly.
2. Choose your soil. A quality pre-amended 'living' soil (e.g., Coast of Maine Stonington Blend, Fox Farm Ocean Forest, Roots Organics Original) will feed a plant for 3-6 weeks with just water. Cheaper peat-based mixes (ProMix HP, Sunshine Mix #4) require feeding from day one but give more control. Aim for a mix that's ~30-50% aeration (perlite, pumice, rice hulls) for a 10 gal container so it doesn't stay waterlogged.

8. Support. A mature plant in a 10 gal pot can get top-heavy. Stake or use a trellis before stretch in flower.
Common mistakes
- Overwatering after transplant. A small root ball in a big wet pot can't drink fast enough. Water only the area around the plant for the first week, or transplant into slightly drier soil.

- No runoff, ever. Without periodic runoff, salts accumulate and pH drifts. Water to runoff at least every second or third watering.
