Lifting Pots to Check Moisture
The oldest, cheapest, and most reliable way to know when your cannabis plants actually need water.
This is the single most useful skill a new indoor grower can learn, and it costs nothing. Moisture meters lie, finger tests are shallow, and watering schedules ignore what your plant is actually doing. Lifting the pot tells you the total water content of the entire root zone. It sounds too simple to matter, but experienced growers do it every single day. Learn it in your first grow and you'll avoid the two things that kill most beginner plants: overwatering and root rot.
What it is
Lifting pots to check moisture is exactly what it sounds like: you pick up the container your plant is growing in and judge, by weight, how much water is left in the substrate. A freshly watered pot is heavy. As roots draw water and the surface evaporates, the pot gets progressively lighter. When it feels close to the weight of a bone-dry pot, it's time to water again.
This works because water is dense — one liter weighs one kilogram (about 2.2 lb) — while dry peat, coco, or soilless mix is remarkably light. The difference between a saturated 5-gallon pot and a fully dried-back one can be 4–8 kg (9–18 lb), which is easy to feel with a little practice Strong evidence.
Why growers use it
Cannabis roots need both water and oxygen. When substrate stays saturated too long, air pockets fill with water, roots suffocate, and opportunistic pathogens like Pythium move in [1] Strong evidence. Overwatering — really, watering too frequently — is the most common cause of stunted growth and root rot in beginner grows [2].
Compared to alternatives:
- Finger test / knuckle test: only tells you about the top inch. The bottom of the pot can still be swampy. Strong evidence

Pot lifting integrates all of these variables automatically, because the plant itself is telling you — via weight — how much water it has used.
When to start
Start the first time you water a transplanted seedling or clone. From that moment on, every time you pick up the pot — full or empty — pay attention to the weight. Within two or three watering cycles you will have an internal library of "just watered," "halfway," and "needs water now."
Continue through veg, flower, and even the final flush or ripening period. During late flower the technique becomes even more important, because deliberate mild dry-backs are used by many commercial growers to push resin production and prevent bud rot Weak / limited.
How to do it (step-by-step)
1. Calibrate with a bone-dry pot. Before you plant, pick up the empty pot filled with dry substrate. Remember that weight. This is your "zero."
2. Water to runoff, then lift again. After the first proper watering (until 10–20% runoff drains from the bottom), let the pot drip for a few minutes, then lift it. This is your "100% — freshly watered" weight. On a 3-gallon fabric pot in coco, expect roughly 5–7 kg (11–15 lb).
3. Lift daily at the same time. Once a day — ideally just before lights-on — pick each pot up with one hand under the base. Compare to the two anchor weights in your memory.
4. Water when the pot feels roughly 25–35% of the way from "dry" to "wet." In practice this is when the pot feels distinctly lighter but not weightless. In coco you'll water more often (every 1–2 days at maturity). In peat-based soil, dry-backs of 3–7 days are normal.
5. Use a scale to remove guesswork (optional). A cheap luggage or kitchen scale turns the technique into a measurement. Weigh saturated and dry, and water when weight drops to about 30% of the difference above dry. Many commercial growers automate this exact logic with load cells [4].
6. Adjust for plant size. As the plant grows, the plant itself adds weight (leaves, stems, buds), so your "dry" reference creeps up over weeks. Recalibrate mentally every week or two.
7. Cross-check with runoff and leaf signs. If leaves droop slightly just before you'd normally water, your timing is close to ideal. Deep drooping means you waited too long. Puffy, downward-cupped leaves with a heavy pot means you watered too soon.
Common mistakes
- Judging only by the top of the substrate. The surface dries first and fastest. A dry top on a heavy pot means don't water. Strong evidence
- Comparing pots of different sizes to each other. Each pot size has its own weight range. Calibrate each one separately.
- Ignoring fabric vs. plastic pots. Fabric pots dry from the sides too and lose weight faster; plastic pots hold water longer at the core. Strong evidence
- Watering tiny volumes "just in case." Small sips keep the top wet and the bottom stagnant — the worst of both worlds. Water thoroughly to 10–20% runoff, then wait for real dry-back [5].
- Never letting the pot get light. Roots grow toward water. A pot that stays heavy all the time produces a shallow, lazy root system.
- Trusting a $15 moisture probe over your hands. In coco and peat mixes those probes are effectively random-number generators once salts build up [3].
