Cannabis for Jet Lag
There's no direct evidence cannabis treats jet lag, and its effects on sleep architecture may make circadian recovery worse, not better.
There are zero clinical trials of cannabis for jet lag. What we know is that jet lag is a circadian problem — your internal clock is out of sync with local time — and cannabis doesn't shift circadian rhythms the way light or melatonin do. THC can knock you out short-term but suppresses REM sleep and can leave you groggy. If you're using weed at your destination to force sleep, you're treating insomnia, not jet lag. It might help you fall asleep on night one. It probably won't help you adjust faster.

Jet lag is what happens when you cross time zones faster than your body's internal clock can adjust. Your circadian system — driven by a small region of the brain called the suprachiasmatic nucleus — still thinks it's the time zone you left. Symptoms include insomnia at night, sleepiness during the day, poor concentration, and gut issues, and they typically last about one day per time zone crossed [1].
The treatments with actual evidence are the ones that directly retrain the clock: timed light exposure, melatonin taken at the right hour, and behavioral schedule shifting. What probably works (for jet lag, not cannabis)
Because there is no direct cannabis-for-jet-lag evidence, it's worth naming what actually does work so you can compare.

None of these are cannabis. That is the point.
What might work with cannabis
The most defensible claim is narrow: short-term sleep onset on the first night or two after arrival.
Cannabis, particularly THC-dominant products, reduces sleep latency in some insomnia populations Weak / limited [4][5]. If jet lag insomnia is the specific problem — you're lying awake at 3 a.m. local because your body thinks it's mid-afternoon — a low-dose THC or THC:CBD product could plausibly help you fall asleep once. This is an indirect inference from insomnia research, not a jet lag finding.

If you try this, the sane approach is: low dose, only at target local bedtime, only for one or two nights, and never as a substitute for light exposure the next morning.
What doesn't work or has weak evidence

- Whether CBD has any measurable effect on circadian phase in humans.
- Whether combining low-dose THC with correctly timed melatonin is better, worse, or the same as melatonin alone.
- Whether cannabis at the destination interferes with the phase-shifting effect of morning light exposure.

Cannabis is the only row in this table with no direct evidence and a mechanism that doesn't address the underlying circadian problem.
Risks and practical considerations
- Legal risk at your destination. Cannabis is illegal in many countries, including some that are common travel destinations. Carrying it across borders is a federal crime in the US and can carry severe penalties abroad. Do not fly with cannabis internationally.
- REM suppression with regular THC use, and REM rebound (vivid dreams, fragmented sleep) on discontinuation Strong evidence [4].
- Next-day cognitive effects from evening edibles, which can compound the cognitive fog of jet lag rather than fix it.
- Interaction with alcohol consumed on the flight or at arrival.
- Cardiovascular effects — THC raises heart rate acutely, which matters if you have underlying cardiac disease and are also dehydrated from a long flight [9].
- Anxiety and panic from unfamiliar products or higher-than-expected doses, especially edibles purchased in a new market.
If you already use cannabis and want to use it on the first night of a trip to help fall asleep, the harm-reduction version is: use a product and dose you know, take it at target local bedtime, don't stack it with alcohol or sleep meds, and still get bright light exposure the next morning. That last step is doing most of the work.
