Bud Rot Prevention in Flower
How to spot, stop, and prevent Botrytis cinerea from destroying your buds during the flowering stage.
Bud rot is the single most demoralizing thing that can happen in flower — you find a fuzzy gray core inside a fat cola and realize half the plant might be compromised. The good news: it's almost entirely a humidity and airflow problem, and it's preventable. The bad news: once it's visible, you're already in salvage mode. Prevention beats treatment every time, and no spray on the market reliably cures an active infection in dense buds.
What bud rot is
Bud rot is an infection of cannabis flowers by Botrytis cinerea, a necrotrophic fungus that also attacks grapes, strawberries, and hundreds of other crops [1][2]. It typically starts inside a dense cola where humidity is highest, killing tissue from the inside out. The first visible sign is often a single yellowing or wilting sugar leaf sticking out of an otherwise healthy-looking bud; pulling it reveals gray-brown mush and, in later stages, a dusty gray sporulation Strong evidence[1].
Botrytis spores are essentially everywhere — they're airborne, they survive on plant debris, and they can remain dormant on healthy tissue until conditions favor infection [2]. You don't 'catch' bud rot from a bad seed; you create the conditions that let ambient spores germinate.
Why prevention matters
There is no reliable cure for an active bud rot infection inside a dense flower. Fungicides labeled for Botrytis on other crops (e.g., fenhexamid, boscalid) are generally not permitted on cannabis in regulated markets, and even where legal they're preventative, not curative [3]. Once mycelium is inside the bud, you cut and discard.
A single infected cola can also seed the rest of the room. Sporulating Botrytis releases millions of conidia that spread on air currents [2]. Losing 5% of a crop to rot is common; losing 50%+ happens when growers miss early signs or run humid rooms in late flower. Prevention is cheap. Salvage is expensive.
When to start
Prevention starts before flower. In veg, structural training (topping, defoliation, trellising) determines how dense your final canopy will be and how well air moves through it. Loose, evenly-lit canopies rot far less than a jungle of overlapping colas Anecdote.
Environmental vigilance ramps up week 3 of flower, when buds start stacking, and becomes critical from week 5 to harvest, when colas are densest and transpiration is highest. Outdoor growers should watch weather forecasts obsessively in the final month — a single warm, rainy week in October is the classic bud rot trigger.
How to prevent bud rot (step by step)
1. Control humidity. Botrytis infection risk rises sharply above ~60% relative humidity and becomes severe above 70% [1][3]. Target 55–60% RH in early flower and 45–55% in late flower. Use a dehumidifier sized for your room, not a bedroom unit hoping for the best.
2. Manage temperature swings. Big day/night temperature drops cause condensation on cold bud surfaces — free water is what spores need to germinate [2]. Keep night temps within ~10°F (5–6°C) of day temps in late flower.
3. Move air through the canopy. Oscillating fans should create gentle, constant movement at bud height. Stagnant pockets inside dense colas are where rot starts.
4. Defoliate strategically. Remove large fan leaves that shade or trap moisture against bud sites, especially in weeks 3 and 5–6 of flower. Don't strip the plant bare — leaves are still photosynthesizing — but open up the interior.
5. Scout daily in late flower. Walk the room every day from week 5 on. Look for single yellow or wilted leaves protruding from otherwise green buds. Gently squeeze suspect colas; healthy ones feel firm and springy, rotted ones feel hollow or crunchy.
6. Cut aggressively at first sign. When you find rot, sterilize scissors with isopropyl, cut well below the infected zone (at least 2–3 inches into clean tissue), bag the infected material immediately, and remove it from the room. Wipe scissors between cuts. Don't shake the plant — you'll aerosolize spores.
7. Consider preventative biologicals. Bacillus subtilis and Trichoderma harzianum products have peer-reviewed activity against Botrytis on other crops and are permitted in many cannabis markets [4]. Evidence in cannabis specifically is limited Weak / limited, but they're low-risk preventatives applied through mid-flower.
Common mistakes
- Trusting a cheap hygrometer. Consumer hygrometers can be off by 10%+ RH. Calibrate with a salt test or buy a known-accurate unit.
- Cooling the room too aggressively at night. Drops from 78°F to 62°F feel efficient but cause bud-surface condensation.
- Running big carbon-filtered exhausts without makeup air control. Pulling humid outdoor air through your room in a wet climate is worse than recirculating.
- Growing rot-prone genetics in humid conditions. Dense indica-leaning strains with tight colas (e.g., many Kush and Purple lines) rot faster than airier sativa-leaning structures Anecdote. The indica/sativa labels don't predict effects reliably, but bud density is a real, observable structural trait.
- Spraying water or foliar products in late flower. Wet buds after week 4 are asking for it.
- Trying to 'dry out' rot with more airflow instead of cutting it. Once mycelium is established, it's already spreading. Cut, don't hope.
