Old Weed Has No THC Left
The claim that aged cannabis loses all its THC is wrong — degradation is real, but it's slow, partial, and produces CBN.
Old weed doesn't magically become inert. THC degrades into CBN over months to years, and the process is heavily dependent on light, heat, oxygen, and humidity. A year-old jar stored in a cool dark cabinet still contains most of its original THC. A baggie left on a sunny windowsill for six months is a different story. The claim that old cannabis 'has no THC' oversimplifies real chemistry into a wives' tale.
The Claim
Walk into any dispensary forum, subreddit, or smoke session and you'll hear some version of it: "That's old weed, it doesn't have any THC left." Sometimes it's phrased as an expiration date — six months, a year, two years — after which the flower is supposedly inert. Budtenders repeat it. Blogs repeat it. It gets used to justify throwing out perfectly usable stash, and it gets used to explain away a disappointing high ("must be old").
The underlying intuition isn't crazy. THC does degrade. But the leap from "degrades" to "has none left" is where the folklore takes over.
What the Evidence Actually Says
The most-cited experiment on cannabis degradation is a 1976 UN study by Turner and colleagues, which tracked cannabinoid levels in stored plant material over two years under different conditions [1] Strong evidence. The headline finding: at room temperature in the dark, THC content dropped roughly 16% in the first year and about 26–27% by the second year. Under light exposure, degradation was dramatically faster. Cold, dark storage preserved cannabinoids far longer.
A 1999 follow-up by Trofin et al. confirmed the pattern: THC decreases over time, primarily through oxidation into cannabinol (CBN), and storage conditions dominate the outcome [2] Strong evidence. None of these studies show cannabis becoming THC-free. Even samples stored badly for two years retained substantial THC. The kinetics are closer to a slow decay curve than a cliff.
A practical translation:
- Well-stored flower (cool, dark, sealed, ~55–62% RH): expect roughly single-digit percent THC loss per year for the first couple of years.
- Poorly stored flower (warm, light-exposed, loose bag): can lose most of its THC in months.
- The THC that leaves doesn't vanish — much of it converts to CBN, which is itself psychoactive, just differently (more sedating, less intoxicating) [4] Weak / limited.
Where the Myth Came From
Three things fused into the "no THC left" folk belief:
1. The CBN sleepiness effect. Old weed often feels different — heavier, more couch-locking, less bright. That's a real phenomenological shift, and it's partly explained by the THC-to-CBN conversion. Users interpreted "feels weaker and sleepier" as "no THC," when the actual chemistry is "less THC, more CBN, plus terpene loss." Terpenes are volatile and evaporate faster than cannabinoids degrade, which flattens the aroma and can make flower feel duller even when THC is largely intact [5] Strong evidence.
2. Pre-legalization storage was terrible. For decades, most consumers received cannabis in thin plastic baggies, often after long trips through unrefrigerated supply chains. That stock genuinely was degraded — not to zero, but enough that "old weed is weak" became lived experience. The generalization to "no THC" was folk extrapolation.
3. Regulatory expiration dates. Some legal markets require an expiration or "best by" date on cannabis packaging (often 6–12 months). What to Do Instead
If you have old cannabis, don't throw it out based on age alone. Instead:
- Look and smell it. Mold, ammonia smells, or a dusty crumble are real reasons to discard. Age alone isn't.
