Lumen
A photometric unit measuring light as perceived by the human eye — widely misused as a grow-light spec for cannabis.
Lumens measure brightness as your eyes see it, not the light energy plants actually use for photosynthesis. Legacy grow guides and lamp marketing still cite lumens because HPS bulbs happen to be efficient in the human-visible range, but it's the wrong yardstick for cannabis. For any serious lighting decision, ignore lumens and look at PPF (µmol/s), PPFD (µmol/m²/s), and efficacy (µmol/J). If a grow light's spec sheet leads with lumens, that's a red flag.

The lumen (lm) is the SI derived unit of luminous flux — the total amount of visible light emitted by a source, weighted by the standard photopic response of the human eye (the CIE V(λ) curve, which peaks at 555 nm green light) [1][2]. Why it's the wrong unit for cannabis grow lights
Photosynthesis is driven by photons in the roughly 400–700 nm range — Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR). Chlorophyll absorbs strongly in blue (~450 nm) and red (~660 nm), where the human eye is comparatively insensitive. A lumen meter will underweight red and blue photons that plants love and overweight green photons that the eye sees best [3][4].
The correct units are:
- PPF (Photosynthetic Photon Flux, µmol/s): total PAR photons emitted per second.
- PPFD (Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density, µmol/m²/s): PAR photons hitting a surface.
- Efficacy (µmol/J): photons per joule of electricity — the modern efficiency metric.
A deep-red LED can look dim to your eye but be excellent for plants; a warm-white bulb can be bright to your eye but mediocre for growth. Strong evidence
Why the folklore persists
For decades, cannabis growers relied on High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamps, whose spectrum happens to overlap reasonably with both human vision and PAR, making lumen-per-watt a rough proxy for horticultural output. Old rules of thumb like "50,000 lumens per square meter for flowering" survive from that era [3]. With modern LED fixtures — some of which are engineered to be photon-efficient but visually unimpressive — those rules break down entirely. Quick conversion caveat
There is no fixed conversion between lumens and PPF. The ratio depends entirely on the light's spectrum. Published conversion factors (e.g. "HPS ≈ 82 lm per µmol/s") are spectrum-specific approximations and should not be applied to LEDs or mixed sources [4]. Strong evidence
