Supercropping in Guerrilla Grows
Bending stems to stress plants into stouter, lower-profile, higher-yielding forms — with special caveats for outdoor stealth grows.
Supercropping is a real, useful technique — it lowers canopy height and can redirect growth to lower bud sites. In a guerrilla plot, that stealth benefit often matters more than any yield bump. But the 'supercropping doubles your yield' talk is folklore. Controlled studies on cannabis HST are thin. Treat it as a shaping tool with a modest, situational upside, not a magic multiplier. And do it early — stressing a flowering plant in a remote plot you visit once a week is a good way to lose branches.
What supercropping is
Supercropping is a high-stress training (HST) technique where a grower pinches and bends a stem hard enough to crush the inner fibers without breaking the outer skin. The stem folds over, the plant heals with a woody knuckle at the bend, and the branch continues growing in a new direction — usually more horizontal.
The underlying principle is well-documented in general plant science: mechanical wounding and altered stem orientation change hormone distribution (particularly auxin) and can shift apical dominance to lateral shoots [1][2] Strong evidence. Why guerrilla growers use it
In a guerrilla grow — an unattended outdoor plot on remote or unowned land — the priorities are different from an indoor tent. You want:
- Low profile. A 2.5 m plant sticking above the brush is a spotting risk from the air, from ridges, and from hikers. Supercropping brings the canopy down, sometimes dramatically Anecdote.
- Sturdy structure. Bent-and-healed 'knuckles' are thicker than the original stem and often support heavier colas without staking Weak / limited.

How to do it, step by step
- Pick the branch. Target main stems or vigorous laterals that are outgrowing the canopy. Ignore small side shoots.
- Find the bend point. Usually 2-4 internodes below the growing tip, where the stem is still slightly soft.
- Warm and soften the stem. Pinch the chosen spot between thumb and forefinger and roll it gently for 10-30 seconds. You're crushing internal fibers, not the skin. The stem should feel noticeably softer and slightly squishy.
- Bend. Fold the stem over in the direction you want growth to go — typically outward and downward, away from the plant's center. It should stay bent on its own. If it springs back, soften it more.
- Support if needed. If the skin tore or the bend is loose, wrap it with plant tape, electrical tape, or a strip of cloth. In a guerrilla setting, use dull, plant-colored materials — no shiny tape visible from a distance.
- Leave it. Within 3-7 days a knuckle forms and the tip reorients upward. You can repeat on new growth as needed.

- Bending too fast. The single biggest cause of snapped stems. Soften first, bend second.

- Low-Stress Training (LST): tying branches down without crushing them. Lower risk, slower results. Often the better default for guerrilla plots.
- Topping: cutting off the main growing tip to force two new leaders. Sometimes combined with supercropping later.
- FIMing: a partial topping cut. Similar goals, different outcome.
- Mainlining / manifolding: a structured combination of topping and LST to build a symmetric plant.
